***UPDATE 8/26, 6:30 PM***

Following the press conference, the Associated Press reports that the men were no "true" threat to Obama.

U.S. Attorney Troy Eid (EYED) describes the men as "meth heads" who weren't capable of such an attack.

The investigation was triggered after police in the Denver suburb of Aurora stopped a truck that was swerving erratically early Sunday. Police say they found two high-powered rifles, two wigs, camouflage clothing, a bulletproof vest and two walkie-talkies in the truck. They say they also found three IDs in other people's names and what they believe to be methamphetamine.

The three men arrested Sunday face drug and gun counts.

strong>***UPDATE 8/26, 11 AM***

More details about the suspected plot to assassinate Obama come trickling in as the police arrest a fourth person in connection with the possible plan. The LA Times has the story.

We knew then that authorities in suburban Aurora had stopped a pickup truck for swerving between lanes early Sunday morning in what they thought was a routine drunk driving incident.

But in the rented vehicle of Tharin Gartrell, a 28-year-old convicted felon, they found two high-powered scoped rifles, ammunition, sighting scopes, radios, a cellphone, a bulletproof vest, wigs, drugs and fake IDs.

According to Brian Masss of Denver's KCNC Channel 4, under questioning Gartrell implicated two other men -- Nathan Johnson, who is 32, and Shawn Adolph, who is 33 -- and Johnson's girlfriend, Natasha Gromack. Johnson also reportedly confirmed the plot to FBI and Secret Service interrogators.

One of the men, Adolph, reportedly wore a ring with the Nazi swastika. He was injured when he jumped out of a hotel window fleeing Secret Service agents. All are now in custody on drug and weapons charges.

The US Attorney handling the case stated that there was never a credible threat against Obama, and will be holding a press conference today 4 PM Denver time (6 PM, EST). More details as they arrive.

***UPDATE*** The FBI is now investigating reports of a possible assassination plot against Barack Obama:

The FBI is looking into reports in Denver media outlets that a man under investigation for drug and weapons violations may have made threats against Barack Obama, officials said Monday.

"It's premature to say that it was a valid threat or that these folks have the ability to carry it out," said a U.S. government official familiar with the investigation. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Law enforcement sources told CBS affiliate KCNC in Denver that one of the suspects "was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama. He responded in the affirmative."

Obama will be in Denver this week to accept the Democratic nomination for president.

FBI spokeswoman Kathy Wright confirmed the FBI was investigating the reports but declined to elaborate. The Joint Information Center - a command set up by Denver, state and federal authorities to field media inquiries during the Democratic convention - had no immediate comment.

***UPDATE*** The Denver Post reports that authorities will hold a press conference tomorrow to discuss the disruption of a possible Obama assassination plot:

Federal authorities have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday afternoon amid reports that a fortunate traffic stop by Aurora Police may have disrupted an assassination attempt against Barack Obama.

The Rocky Mountain News reports that police in Colorado are investigating a possible plot to assassinate Barack Obama:

Law enforcement authorities have arrested two men, and several law enforcement sources say the investigation is looking into whether the men intended to harm presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.

According to multiple sources, Aurora police made a routine traffic stop Sunday morning at 2:38 a.m. The Secret Service says two rifles were found in the car along with methamphetamine. Another law enforcement source says he was told at least one of the rifles was a "sniper rifle."

A second source told CBS4 Investigator Brian Maass authorities told officers they are concerned they may have come upon a possible "assassination plot."

Interesting that this hypocrite Bush supporter and appointee Troy Eid did consider a letter intercepted from jail threatening John McCain as a more tangible threat than this.

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/politics/17267476/detail.html

In that case the guy was incarcerated, had no access to any weapons (especially not high-powered rifles with scopes) and could never have gotten anywhere near McCain.

Yet guess who was charged with making a threat? It wasn't the gang that carried a variety of weapons, had vehicles, and were roaming Denver in search of ways to make a hit on Obama.

Has it ever occurred to anyone that the US Attorney is a Bush appointee and that he has no intention of attracting sympathy to Obama by stating that the threat was ever serious???

Smart comment. "Wag the dog" to make the nominee seem more substantial. And, of course, it all justifies his continued separation from the people by huge stages, ropes, and guards, guards, guards. Since he likes orchestrated events he can control and dislikes real campaigning, this serves an essential purpose for him.

Naturally. I mean it's not like he has any supporters at these events. There is actually a sophisticated system of holographic projectors making it SEEM as though there are attendees. How can anyone be so easily fooled?

It doesn't take a mission impossible plot. Ask John Lennon or RFK. They can't say what is credible and what isn't

Bingo. It's more about will than means. It's not terribly hard to shoot someone, and it looks like these guys put a little more effort into it than most.

You can't blame the GOP directly for this. This may be part of their voting bloc, but you can't just lump them together. It's pure and simple prejudice.

That said, I'm not sure this trio could have found their way to the convention, much less bypass hundreds of thousands worth of high powered security.

Um, I'm not sure anyone did blame the GOP, first. Second, if these guys are involved in the White Nationalism circuit, they're probably anti-GOP too, for the most part.

Second, shooting someone isn't that hard. Lucky for us, most people don't have the motivation.

OK. I'll bite. What does the following track record say about the GOP as the self-appointed "party of conservative Christian family values:"

http://www.armchairsubversive.org

Seems the GOP these past decades has been *enabling* all sorts of bad behavior, yet you insist that "lumping them together" is just "...pure and simple prejudice."

Guess you're taking a *wide stance* on the matter of the "Greedy Old Perverts and what constitutes morally upright behavior.

History is full of stooges like these serving as perfect fall guys for real professionals carrying out the bidding of the rich, powerful, and authoritarian.

I am in no way defending the GOP's individual offenders. I am simply saying that there have been good conservatives in the past, hence the nullification of the claim that every member of the Republican party supports this type of movement.

The only time it's happened to someone on the right was Wallace. You have guys like Ted Nugent and Michael Savage encouraging these wackos. The GOP is full of knuckle draggers.

Indeed he was...and the guy that did it also was on drugs. But according to Eid's criteria, if a person in the disinhibited state of drug abuse says something it's not to be taken seriously.

Oh also the attempted assassinations of Gerald Ford by Lynnette Squeaky" Frahm and Sara Jane Moore were also by drug addled maniacs. And also Dan White, who assassinated Major Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk in SF.

What Eid is doing is sort of what Musharraf's security department did for Bhutto. One doesn't have to actually involve oneself to enable an assassination. One just needs to ignore or lessen the threat.

My 2 cents for what it 's worth (nothing) is that these bozo's were a threat BUT not a credible one. So what's the difference? Well a credible threat would be someone capable of following through with their intentions. After getting their confession on their intent to assassinate Obama, I'm sure the FBI also got them to talk about their actual plan. And sweating like little stuck pigs I'm sure they gave it up. The part about this plot being "no credible threat" is an assessment of the actual plan. Now it is true they had high-powered rifles, wigs, camoflauge (ha! in the city), hotel rooms, and whatever else BUT did they even have a time and location to be in position to get a shot? Doubtful...
People saying the media will downplay this are correct. THEY WILL!

An interesting question is how did a few meth freaks end up with the paraphenalia of an assasination plot? My wild guess is that these guys are patsies but whose patsies? Certainly not the Neocons. They would be smarter than to use these clowns. So who? Well I think this plot most likely originated in a prison somewhere by a shot caller for the Aryan Brotherhood. Proably some lifer who ain't never getting out, hates blacks, and has these idiots to write to and boss around. Of course that is just a shot in the dark on my part but I'd be willing to wager $20 dollars.
Anyone want to bet?

As for Obama, I think he has his own team looking out for him, and apparently they are doing a good job at it.

This involves the hypothetical that those guys could indeed be "patsies": Using "mental incompetents" as patsies is a hallmark of the neocons. Remember the Miami 5? Even at Gitmo, they imprisoned a man (can't remember his name, but the NYT reported it) knowing he was seriously mentally impaired, and tortured him for terrorist plots. The guy "confessed" all these terror plots (which turned out to be bogus), but were used by the Bush admin to justify terror alerts among god knows what else.

As for those nazi/supremest groups, its also public record that they've been heavily infiltrated by government agents (a couple years back a court witness accidentally exposed the identity of an FBI agent who happened to be a high level member of a major white supremest group, even organizing major demonstrations that put cities on lockdown). These types of groups are CRAWLING with people who have mental issues and can be taken advantage of. One example good example of this was the Hal Turner show, which was an extremely offensive white-supremest conspiracy-related radio show, that is, until someone posted emails between Hal and the FBI where he talked about baiting "the crazies" and flagging them for the FBI. One wonders to what capacity they used those persons that were flagged...

No bet- I have no idea where these losers got their motivation from. (however-I'd be interested in finding out what sort of reading material, videos, etc. were found in their residences). I do differ on whether the threat was credible. Rifles, ammunition, bullet proof vests seems to be the right equipment to work with. Undoubtedly these guys were the sharpest tools in the shed....but history has shown us that there have been several nutjobs that have been successful, or close to successful, in carrying out their twisted schemes. Hinckley and Chapman come to mind...but there are also many others. And who would have thought that a few guys with box cutters could bring down the World Trade Center?

I see that my response to "mean green machine" was not posted and thats OK. Maybe I did not clearly make my point. My desire was to point out that always focusing on Dems and Republicans is counter productive. The important thing is the good of the country. True the past 8 years have been terrible. But we can never make light of wakos that get their hands on guns. They rarely care about politics. They are narcissistic folks that care more for their opinion and no ONE man or woman or group of people has a monopoly on the best ideas. It takes us all.

i'm praying that law enforcement and the secret service are up to the task of protecting the candidate; a bulletproof vest is at best a 'half-measure'...the examples you cited (lincoln, jfk, mlk) are proof of that-all three were shot in the head; and a bulletproof vest is not going to protect you from a round from a high-powered rifle

What constitutes a "Credible threat" should be properly defined, so we know what criteria must be met. They seem to be at least as well-organized as many domestic "terror cells"; the government clearly viewed those groups as credible threats.

Why is it always the dumbest and ugliest of people who always cliam to be members of the "superior race"? Couldn't they find at least one good poster child to make some of that "superiority" shine through?

I have to agree that this was probably not an actualy threat to Obama, these guys couldn't have assassinated Obama if he was at the business end of a lifesized "Mousetrap" game and they were the boot.
