NETS Summary Virtually all ISTE standards are met within the Tapped In Community. Currently, there are no assessment tools built within the interface, but the wide ranging professional development groups support all other standards. Being a professional community, there are always groups meeting and addressing issues surrounding the various standards for students, teachers and administrators.

Several groups that specifically address these standards:

  • ISTE_NCATE Support Group
  • SIGTC
  • NETS
  • NBPTS (National Board Certification)
  • Collaboration Community
  • SAFE-T (School Admins Forum Ed-Tech )
  • Taming the Tiger (the Tiger is technology)
  • Teachers Using Technology
  • Technology Rich Classrooms
  • Web Tools for Education
  • The Blogstreams Salon
  • Webheads in Action (ESL Group)
  • Please take a look at The Calendar of Events

    (all events Pacific time)

A separate safe and secure K-12 campus allows students to work on projects, collaborate with other students (with their teacher's permission), engage in student-centered project based learning, all the while developing their tech skills and becoming involved with their own education.

    Proposal Summary

Purpose & Objectives Educators are inundated with a variety of options regarding how to use the Internet (and related expensive educational software) in their classroom. However, the most important and often overlooked resource is the human factor. Tapped In is a virtual learning community that extends professional development opportunities far beyond one day workshops.

One day workshops often suffer through lack of follow through. Without sustained support, participants often revert to long-established routines. Becoming part of the Tapped In community allows for sustained support and professional development. This workshop begins *before* the workshop for those participants who wish to join in advance (and are strongly encouraged to do so). More important, Tapped In is a venue where members may continue to collaborate and develop for years to come. It is in a sense, an electronic hub of personal and professional development.

    Participants will:

  • Create professional profiles and offices
  • Join pertinent professional development groups
  • Create new groups for collaboration with peers in subject areas
  • Progress from neophytes to expert users in three hours
  • Create K-12 classrooms for their students and learn how to manage them
  • Learn how to create a virtual school district on their own server for intra-district collaboration
  • Receive ongoing support (both live, through threaded discussions and files) for the rest of their careers
  • This workshop will give educators a chance to make new connections now, and in the future. Tapped In is, in a sense, a one stop shop for lifelong learning and professional development.

        Outline Pre-Workshop:
Workshop participants are strongly encouraged to register at Tapped In click the "Become a member link") and take one of the regularly scheduled "Tips and Tricks Tours." Tours take about an hour.

Hour 1: Introduction to Tapped In and Virtual Learning Communities.
Presenter David Wexler will be physically present to introduce Tapped In. Jeff Cooper will be online at Tapped In and supporting virtually (a videoconference hookup is requested). Information includes:

  • "About Tapped In"
  • Registration and introductory tour for those not registered.
  • Tour includes creation of a personal office, using the interface, viewing the professional development calendar, joining groups, and a quick tour of the K-12 campus (time permitting)

  • Second tour available for those members who have already registered and taken the preliminary tour. Second tour includes:
  • creating passageways between offices and groups
  • personal profile development
  • image note creation
  • html and rss within threaded discussions
  • website projection on remote computers

  • Participants who have already set up offices, joined groups, created groups and K-12 classes have the option to assist workshop members who need help.

Hour 2: Group and K-12 classroom creation
  • Participants will create their own group and/or K-12 classroom.
  • Participants will learn to manage their K-12 class, set up student accounts, set permission levels, collaborate with other K-12 classes (optional).

  • Hour 3: Open Tap and the Future of Tapped In
  • Participants will learn how to create their own version of Tapped In on their own servers.
  • Some participants will continue with hour two work.

  •     Supporting Research Tapped In Papers and Presentations
    http://tappedin.org/tappedin/web/papers/

Special Program Emphasis—Charting an Intentional Future Open Tap is the open source freeware available for download. The future possibilities include:

  • Virtual schools and school districts

  • Virtual universities (both mirroring existing brick and mortar structures as well as creating virtual counterparts)

  • Tapped In is currently primarily a text based environment. With future hacking, it could integrate existing technologies such as phbb for improved threaded discussions, Skype, interactive whiteboards, webconferencing.
  •     V•NECC—Virtually Extending NECC
  • Blogs
  • Tapped In supports RSS and has several groups related to blogging, the most active being The Blogstreams Salon which meets on Sundays at 2p.m. Pacific
  • Audiocasts
  • Tapped In does not currently support audiocasts, but often holds real time discussions of ongoing audiocasts such as Jeff Lebow's weekly "EdTech Talk."
  • Mailing Lists
  • All group and classrooms have a threaded discussion board which acts as a mini-listserv, sending the post to all members of the group.
  • Threaded Discussions
  • are one of the features of Tapped In
  • Action Research Projects
  • Tapped In supports educators engaged in action research projects. There are daily real time meetings with a wide array of subjects covered. If you are engaged in an action research project, you may set up your own group room for this endeavour, and recruit other members to take part.
  • Collaborative Projects
  • Tapped In acts as a virtual meeting place and supports hundreds of communities of practice, which may choose to act independently, or collaboratively with other groups.
  • Online Courses
  • Tapped In has hundreds of online courses, both K-12 and University level.

A hybrid solution utilizing Tapped In and other existing software could easily create a Virtual NECC, in addition to continuing the dialogue beyond the actual conference.

Presenter Background & Qualifications Jeff Cooper is an Education Technology Consultant, as well as being a professional educator with over 15 years experience, mostly teaching English, ESL and Computer Applications. He has volunteered on Helpdesk at Tapped In since it began in 1997, and supported thousands of educators and students through the Tapped In Interface.

He is the #1 expert in end-user support of Tapped In.

He has written a number of articles related to Tapped In.
He presented a similar workshop at the 2003 NCCE Conference in Portland and attended the Seattle NECC in 2003.

David Weksler began working with teachers, technology and professional development in 1993 when the National Science Foundation funded The Geometry Forum at Swarthmore College. He has continued to support teachers understanding of technology, especially in areas of math and science for the past 12+ years.

However, high tech skills are *not* a prerequisite of this workshop. Members who consider themselves "compuphobic" are encouraged to attend. Tapped In is the only online site that offers *free realtime help* to its members. All are welcome!
