Is this where we are going?

Comments

The broader scenario in Idiocracy was one where much of society has failed and people just work around the parts that don't work anymore (rather than try to fix them) in a never-ending pursuit of trivial self-interest.

Ever since I first saw the movie, I am reminded of it very often in day-to-day life, but we're not there yet. But I'm pretty sure we'll keep saying "we're not there yet" until we get there. That seems to be the style of discourse these days: to deny people's concerns and say that we're not as bad as X.

Although... the clip you posted... a black president with pop culture appeal and a flamboyant speaking style promising to eliminate Middle Eastern oil dependency in 10 years because he can say anything and make it sound good? And one that won't claim to do the work himself, but to rely on collaboration with smarter associates?

It might not be fixing the dead crops and dust storms in one week using this guy Not Sure who's the smartest man alive, but it's close.

I am just glad that the politics here are a bit more advanced, although the political analysis is far more advanced in the US than it is here, even if the candidates aren't.

Still, if we keep playing this game of inclusiveness, trying to say that we have to make politics relevant to people (rather than have high expectations that they will invest some time to learn about what it all means for reasons other than self-interest), then the speech in your clip may not be all that far off.
