I just stumbled upon this archive video of a show from 1988 called Computer Chronicles. It’s a feature program all about the Commodore 64, my second computer.

This brings back lots of good memories. My friends use to come over to my place to play Skate or Die, this was back when Tony Hawk was still a professional skateboarder.

The guests also talk about BBSing, which was something I was very much involved with in the 416 way back when.

The funny part is that my first computer wasn’t even the Commodore 64, it was the TRS-80.

I remember learning Basic on it, then recording my programs to the cassette recorder for storage. Good times.

Just a quick note to thank everyone for coming out to the Flying Saucer last night for a Twitter Meet Up. I think we must have had about 15 people there.

Apparently some folks were at the bar, but couldn’t find us. It is a big, crowded bar, but I figured a large location would give us more of an opportunity to sit together (and we did).

I held my iPhone tightly all night, to feel it for vibrations of incoming calls, text msgs, emails and Twitter DMs. I even got creative using the Banner Free App for the iPhone. It’s a very simple scrolling text marque, similar to a stock ticker. I placed it on our table hoping to catch the eyes of anyone looking for our group.

I must mention that it was fun hanging out with Colleen Coplick too. I hadn’t seen Colleen (since I met her) at SXSW Interactive last year in Austin. The Vancouver native is a very popular Social Media and PR professional, she’s the Chief Instigator for b5Media. Oh, and she’s a hoot to hand out with.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday at the Geek Breakfast.

I was listening to a great topic on Spark today. Nora Young was speaking to Jackie Sharkey about the Internet in Nunavut, Canada (that’s in the north, WAY in the north). Sharkey explained how they have limited bandwidth at high prices, and often have to deal with dial-up speed connections. The Nunavut people depend heavily on using the web to shop for items that are far less expensive than they are in any brick and mortar store.

I also read an article recently claiming that 20 million Americans only have access to dial-up.

Nora Young and her awesome team (hi Dan) at Spark have created Spark Lite, a low-bandwidth version of the excellent podcast. This is a great solution for people trying to download podcasts, but it begs a bigger question.

How can we help give everyone cheap, hi-speed access to the web?

This would help people in rural communities tell their stories to the world, it would help connect them with similar people. Seeing news and stories from around the world help shape our minds.

When all you have is local media, all you have is… local media. While local media does it’s part, it’s important to get the story from different sources too. The web isn’t just commercial or social, it’s educational too.

How can we help? How can “I” help? I’d love your thoughts.

I attempted to recreate the bizarre pony tweet today by tweeting with the word “pony”.

Sure enough a few minutes later I received this tweet:

This had me laughing all day. I love really obscure, strange humor. Of course I visited the @wheepony profile page and it’s simply Wheee!!! Pony!!! tweets to loads of people. There’s no link to who is responsible, or why they have set up this auto reply, but that’s why it’s so great.

I hope this doesn’t turn out to be some lame attempt at viral marketing for a new movie about ponies, or perhaps the 25th anniversary of My Little Pony. If this remains anonymous I will be a happy camper.

I came across an amazing list of the Top 150 Social Marketing Blogs today. Listed in the number one position is my friend, Chris Brogan. He certainly deserves the top billing for this list, because he’s one of the hardest working people in the business. Chris spends so much of his time giving “us” information to make our lives better. Way to go Chris!
