This one I love LOve LOVE!!!
I just love festivals. Most of the time we go through our daily lives and the system tells us who we are and what we stand for. we judge other people based on that. We avoid eye contact. we get pissed of with someone when the service isnt good even though they are just doing their job.
There are systems that tear us apart and their are systems that bring us together. We relate to each other in a particular way depending on the system or situation we find ourselves a part. One of the key problems we have in the world at a macro level is that the systems within which we live our daily lives are not designed to bring us together.
You could go as far as to say that our financial and political systems are designed specifically to divide and conquer, for they are playing a very different game, and we are merely pawns in that game. Never forget the eternal question when pondering such things - what do they serve and what do they cost?
But festivals, ah now. They alone are designed to bring us together. To make us feel as one. To bring out the best in us. To provide a platform on which we can celebrate ourselves.
This series has a bit of a ‘high concept’ feel about it. Channel 4 and the Beed have all done it before, but what I’ve added is a down and dirty feel - allowing the people at the festival to tell the story as much as the pretty blonde presenter. The show itself should add to the spectacle overall.
We dont have the beaches or the mountains or the weather or the showcase of beautiful people (come on, anyone been to Budapest or Copenhagan lately?) but what we do have is the summer festivals. And there are times when you feel that having humanity itself on show in such a mass spectacle makes up for all the rest.
If only we could move there.
PS - I’m not talking about Oxegen here by the way - thats a load of bollix.
